3.3 Project Design: Ask, Imagine, Plan
Learning Objectives:
After this lesson, students can
- know and apply the steps of engineering design cycle;
- use SCAMPER skills in design ideas creation;
- know the requirement and specification of the term project.
1. DESIGN CYCLE
There are many versions of design cycle. The following is a very simple one.
1. ASK: Identify the problem
2. IMAGINE: Brainstorm ideas
3. PLAN: Design a solution
4. CREATE: Make a model
5. IMPROVE: Test and evaluate
2. SCAMPER (a concept generation tool for brainstorming)
- SCAMPER is a quick, easy and direct form of creative brainstorming. You use the tool by asking questions about existing products, using each of the seven prompts above. These questions help you come up with creative ideas for developing new products, and for improving current ones.
- Substitute
- Combine
- Adapt
- Modify
- Put to another use
- Eliminate

3. DESIGN FACTORS
4. PROJECT: LED LIGHTING (IoT?)
Specification (not finalised)
- Hardware:
- Use MCU controller boards, e.g. Arduino UNO or Wemos D1
- Use Neopixel compatible LED matrix
- Software:
- tinkercad.com (Arduino UNO), or
- arduinoblocks.com (Arduino UNO or Wemos D1)
- Use acrylic sheets
5. HOMEWORK
